| | Albuquerque - Weird Al | ] | This whole thing will show how much of a role playing gaming geek I am (as if you didn't know that). I joined the playtesting for D&D Next, which is the new version of Dungeons and Dragons that Wizards of the Coast are planning on releasing soon. Now I have been playing the game on and off for 30 years, so before I explain to you what I think, I decided to explain a bit of the history of the game and how it got to be the way it is. When D&D first came out, it was the classic "red book" version, and it allowed for exactly seven classes - fighter, magic user, cleric, thief, elf, dwarf and halfling. You couldn't be an elven thief or an elven fighter. Elf was the class. There were five boxed sets (Basic, Expert, Companion, Master and Immortal, or as we referred to them, red, blue, cyan, black and brown). This is the version of D&D I originally learned to play when I played it for the first time. The only thing I remember about that first character (which I didn't create, but was given by the DM) was that his name was Joe Fighter. I will let you go figure out what class he was. Then in the early 80s, TSR came out with a new game that used a similar engine called Advanced D&D. This game separated race from class, and contained all sorts of new combinations of things to play (Half orc cleric/assassins! Half elf fighter/magic user/clerics! Gnome illusionist/thieves!). Both of these games used an engine for combat called THAC0. This was a calculation based on your class, your level, the monster's hit dice (which was the equivalent of its level) and its armor. However, one of the things that neither game had was a way of differentiating between Joe Fighter and Fred Fighter. Other than which armor they wore and which equipment they carried, there essentially wasn't a difference between them. The games simply didn't take into account things like character history or skills. Then at the end of the 80s, they released 2nd edition for Advanced D&D. The basic engine was still pretty much the same, but they made a lot of changes to characters. Amongst other things, they removed some classes (monk and assassin) and the race of half orcs. They made bards into a class you could take instead of the strange combination of fighter-thief-druid it had been in the first edition. One of the other things that came with 2nd edition were the Complete series of books (Complete Fighter, Complete Dwarf, etc.) which allowed you to make a more personalized hero. Then in 2000, Wizards of the Coast (which had since bought TSR) released 3rd Edition. This version completely changed the game engine to the D20 system (where almost all character actions have their success determined by rolling a d20 and adding a bonus/penalty based on the character's skills and abilities). They also instituted a system of skills and feats which allowed personalization of your hero, and allowed you to create a more rich history for your character. It also put back in the half orc race and monk class. The story I heard is that they were originally removed because the game designers didn't think that classes like monk fit in with the more European feel that they felt the game had (due to classes like that of the paladin), and then they changed their minds and said that if your world could fit them together, who are they to say otherwise. In 2003, Wizards released 3.5. The game engine was the same, only enough changes were made to improve certain classes and abilities. Of all the versions I have played (and I have played *all* of the above at one time or another), this is my favorite. In 2007, Wizards decided they wanted to make a new version of the game that would attract young gamers to the game. So they released 4th Edition. My problem with the game is that the entire game was now 100% combat oriented. All race and class powers effected combat somehow. I tried running a campaign in 4th edition, and did not like it at all. Side bar - the fact that the party managed to explore a goblin lair, finding the only possible route that would alert every single goblin in the lair to their presence without actually coming into contact with them until they entered the goblin king's room, thereby causing the entire tribe to overrun them in a single fight is besides the point. So now Wizards is talking about D&D Next, which will be the 5th Edition (or 7th, if you really want to count all of the above). What is good is that they are doing it with a public playtesting, allowing anyone to register and download certain basic parts of the game to test and give them feedback on them. I signed up and got the first package. And to be honest, I like what I am seeing. The package comes with an abbreviated rules book (which basically explains the d20 system and how combat works), five characters (a fighter, a rogue, a wizard and two clerics) and an adventure you can run. One of the first things I liked was that the adventure is based on Keep on the Borderlands, which was an adventure that came with the Basic D&D set, and was the adventure that pretty much all the gamers of my generation cut their teeth on. The characters come as is. There are no rules in this package about character creation. But I like the system they are using. You have a race, a class, a background (which provides certain bonuses towards skill checks) and a theme. The idea of a theme (from what I can tell) is a way to sub-divide the classes, so that you have different kinds of fighters (for example), and the feats they receive (and hopefully not just receive automatically, but the list you get to choose from) are based on this. They have taken away the system of once-per-day/once-per-encounter powers that they introduced in 4th Edition, which is something I am happy about. This was the system that made everything so very much combat oriented. The actual system itself is still the D20 system, which is fine. They did get rid of the saving throw system that they have had all along. Originally, there were saving throws for specific situations (like Poison or Paralysis), and then it was changed to a three saving throw system (Will, Reflex and Fortitude). The system they have gone with is that each basic ability (the six "classic" abilities of Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom and Charisma) give you a bonus/penalty and this will act as the relevant saving throw as the situation calls for. So if you are trying to break apart the chains that hold you, that is a Strength saving throw. If you try to escape the chains, that is a Dexterity saving throw. And resisting spell effects would be based on the actual spell itself. So all in all, I like what I am seeing. I want to see more of the character creation process, so that I can see how many options you have for backgrounds and themes, as well as which races and classes are going to be included (In 4th Edition, bards and druids, which are my favorite classes, were not available in the original Players Handbook and were only added in Players Handbook #2). And I have not posted any trivia in a loooooooooooong time. So I guess I better do that. But first I should give some answers to a question I asked a long time ago. I asked you to identify certain comic book super villians based on their civilian names, and to tell me who their arch-nemeses are. The only person who sent me answers was my brother, and he got all four of his answers correct (1, 3, 5 and 6) 1) Harvey Elder - The Mole Man was the first foe that the Fantastic Four battled. 2) Priscilla Rich - Cheetah is one of Wonder Woman's oldest foes. 3) Anton Vanko - Whether you call him Whiplash or you call him the Crimson Dynamo, he is Iron Man's enemy. 4) Leonard Snart - Captain Cold is a member of Flash's Rogues Gallery. 5) Telford Porter - The Vanisher has caused trouble for the X-Men almost from the beginning. 6) Orm Marius - The Ocean Master is one of Aquaman's enemies. 7) Quentin Beck - When Mysterio appears, it is Spider-Man who fights him. 8) Waylon Jones - Killer Croc escapes Arkham Asylum every so often, as do most of Batman's foes. 9) Alexei Shostakov - The Red Guardian was the Russian version of Captain America (and also Black Widow's husband). 10) Clifford Zmeck - Major Force was Captain Atom's nemesis. So my question is from the world of Literature. I will give a list of people, and you should tell me who their best friends are. So, for example, if I listed Tom Sawyer, the answer would be Huckleberry Finn. Here goes: 1) Richard MacDuff 2) Eto Demerzel 3) George Milton 4) The Hon. Algernon Montgomery Lacey 5) Baron du Vallon de Bracieux de Pierrefonds 6) Gabriel John Utterson 7) Fflewddur Fflam 8) "Ratso" Sloman 9) Fahr 10) Hobart Floyt |

| What I want for my birthday |
[Apr. 28th, 2012|08:50 pm] |
It will be my birthday soon. I have decided what I would like. There are two series of Marvel Essentials that I collect. I have Essential Avengers 1-4 and 6. I would like #5. I have Essential X-Men 1, 3-5 and 7. I would like #2 and #6. That is all for now. You can now go back to your otherwise humdrum lives. |

| | Theme From 'Super Skrull' - Ookla The Mok | ] | I haven't been posting. I know. Terrible. I will do a proper posting about what is going on in my life some other time. Right now, all I am going to do is post a trivia question. I had posted ten song lyrics and had asked you to identify them. And Joe, sorry, but there were no Rush songs this time. Here are the answers: 1) And when that I have murdered the man in the moon to a powder - antongarou knew the song, but got the name wrong. It's Boys of Bedlam and I have Steeleyed Span's cover. 2) Now, I don't mind, I'm chopping wood and I don't care if the money's no good - No one identified The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, originally by The Band. I have Joan Baez' cover. 3) I look into the mirror, I see no happiness. All the warmth I gave you has turned to emptiness - Another one that no one got. The band is Yes, the song is Changes. 4) You followed me through changes and patiently you'd wait, till I came to my senses through some miracle of fate - No one got Survivor and The Search Is Over. 5) Dressing up in costumes, playing silly games, hiding out in tree-tops, shouting out rude names - Points go to filkertom for knowing Peter Gabriel and Games Without Frontiers. 6) I am falling down the stairs, I am skipping on the sidewalk - joebrown42 knew this one. Suzanne Vega and Smell Blue Thing. 7) In the shade of a jungle glade, or the rush of the crushing street - Another point to Joe, who got The Majesty Of Rock by Spinal Tap. 8) All my thoughts of outrage, embarrassment and pain were washed away by what then went roaring through my brain - No one knew Harry Chapin's The Mayor Of Candor Lied. 9) There is no more unethical treatment of the elephants. - I am surprised that no one knew this one. Flight of the Conchords. Robots. 10) Is it on then, are we on the brink? We wish you'd all throw in the towel - Men At Work with It's A Mistake, which no one got. I have been watching Doctor Who. So here are 11 Doctor related questions, one for each Doctor. They are NOT in order of Doctors. That is just something I am doing to make it a little more difficult. 1) Who was the only companion not to travel in the Tardis? 2) Who was the only Doctor to smoke? 3) What is the Doctor allergic to, and what does he carry to help him with this allergy? 4) Which is the only Doctor not to have dealt with the Master? 5) Which Doctor had earlier appeared in the series - as a baddie! 6) How long was the scarf? 7) What was Donna Noble’s job before she started traveling with The Doctor? 8) Which was the first Doctor to use the sonic screwdriver? 9) Who grew up into her own cousin? 10) Which Doctor regenerated into himself? 11) Who was the first non-British actor to portray the Doctor? |

| | Birdhouse In Your Soul - They Might Be Giants | ] | So let's start with the bad news, and get it out of the way. And it's not completely bad news anyway. Joe is leaving tonight for the US. He has a job on Florence, SC. Keren and the girls will be joining him at the end of December. On the one hand, I can be completely selfish and say this is bad news. My brother is moving 6000 miles away, and taking The Most Adorable Nieces On The Planet with him. But on the other hand, it's a job. And from what I understand from him (not knowing all the details), it's a great job. They have offered him a sweet deal, and from what I understand, they are really going all out to get him. So I am happy for him, but it is a bittersweet happiness. I just wish that the job kept him somewhere a lot closer. Okay, that is the bad news out of the way. The good news is that I have finally been allowed to change my schedule at work to a Sunday to Thursday work week, rather than a Monday to Friday. It doesn't go into effect until the end of November, but it means that soon I will no longer have to wake up at 4:30a.m. on Fridays, and that I will be able to do something Friday nights other than falling asleep. Now, as for my trivia question, I had asked which of the original members of Torchwood had never come into direct contact with the Doctor. The answer, as skully01 knew, was that it was Owen Harper. Tonight's question is from the world of comics. When the Green Goblin flies in, you know that Spider-Man is not far behind. And if Lex Luthor hatches a nefarious plan, you can tell that Superman should be on the scene soon enough. But who will save the day if any of the following get up to their no-good tricks? 1) Harvey Elder 2) Priscilla Rich 3) Anton Vanko 4) Leonard Snart 5) Telford Porter 6) Orm Marius 7) Quentin Beck 8) Waylon Jones 9) Alexei Shostakov 10) Clifford Zmeck |

| | All About Soul - Billy Joel | ] | Once again, I hit the random selector on my list of music and pull the lyrics from 10 songs. | | Cardiac Arrest - Madness | ] | My house is a mess. The landlady has hired someone to come in and paint and do some basic fixes that need to be done. The guy leaves a complete mess every day. If the place is not cleaned up when the job is done, I am going to hire someone and deduct it from the rent. Anyway, I had posted ten addresses and asked you to tell me who lives there. Here are the answers: 1) 76 Totters Lane - The scrap yard at this address belongs to I.M. Foreman, however, this is the residing place of the Tardis in the very first episode of Doctor Who. skully01 got it. 2) 890 Fifth Avenue, Manhattan, New York City - No one got this. This is the address of Avengers Mansion. 3) 4222 Clinton Way, Los Angeles, California - Another one that got no guesses. Doesn't anyone recognize Mike and Carol Brady's address? 4) 740 Evergreen Terrace - mick_hale, shame on you! This is next door to the Simpsons, who live at 742! This is the Flanders' home. 5) 425 Grove Street, Apartment 20, New York - No guesses for this either. This is the apartment that most of Friends takes place in (i.e. the one that Monica and Rachel live in at the start of the show) 6) 730 Knapp Avenue, Milwaukee, Wisconsin - zevabe got this one correct. Laverne and Shirley live here. 7) 4 Privet Drive, Little Whinging, Surrey - mick_hale, lovechilde, janetmiles and someone who remains anonymous all knew that the Dursleys live here. 8) Apartment 5A, 129 West 81st Street, New York - Jerry Seinfeld lives here. And no one guessed it. 9) 1630 Revello Drive - lovechilde and Anonymous recognized the Summers' residence from Buffy The Vampire Slayer. 10) 1407 Graymalkin Lane - Points again to lovechilde and Anonymous who knew the address of the Xavier Institute for Higher Learning, where the X-men live and train. Today's question is from television, and more specifically, Torchwood. Of all the members that we have seen of Torchwood, who is the only one NOT to have come in direct contact with The Doctor? |

| | 25 or 6 to 4 - Chicago | ] | I had asked you to identify 10 superheroes or super-villians. Here are the answers: 1) Alec Holland - both tomsmith and joebrown42 knew that this is Swamp Thing. 2) Chuck Taine - only filkertom knew Bouncing Boy (from the Legion of Super Heroes) 3) Erik Josten - No one got this. Originally, he was Power Man, then became Smuggler and finally he is known as Goliath. 4) Steve Harmon - Joe knew this , as I knew he would, seeing as he has the whole run of Slapstick. 5) Percival Chang - No one got this either. He is Grunge, from Gen 13. 6) Tom Mayflower - Another one no one could identify. Tom Mayflower is The Escapist. 7) Sara Pezzini - Good guess, lovechilde. You got it right. She is Witchblade. 8) Jim Hammond - The original Human Torch (the android). No one got this. 9) Al Pratt - The Atom (the JSA one, not Ray Palmer). Yet another one with no guesses. 10)Logan Wayne - filkertom knew it. My friend Rafi knew it. This is Dark Claw, from the Amalgam world. He is a combination of Wolverine and Batman. So today I am going to give an easier question. My usual style - 10 song lyrics from songs in my eclectic collection. You have to identify the song. Remember these are NOT the first line of the songs. 1) And everything worked out fine in the end. Cher and Sonny broke up, but they'll always be friends. 2) Somewhere just beyond the mist, spirits were seen flying, as the lightning led her way through the dark. 3) We can circle around like hurricanes, dance and dream like lovers. 4) So I went to the park and I took some paper along and that's where I made this song. 5) And all I do is miss you, and the way we used to be. [Jun. 18th, 2011|07:02 am] |
For those of you who may not know this, but for the longest time, I have been having problems with my computer. Finally, my friend (and the guy I bought it from) Yehuda King took it back and said he would fix it. Well, a month ago, he was sent by the American State Department (he works for them as the IT guy in the Jerusalem embassyconsulate.) to the US for a month. While he was there, his storage area and workspace was broken into. And they stole my computer. So it looks like next week, I am getting a brand new computer. |

I don't have much else to post about, but I do have a trivia question that I put together with the help of my friend Fi in Scotland. But first I owe you an answer. I had put together movie/tv duos based on other characters the actors had played. Here are the correct answers: 1) Michael Dorsey and Marty Bishop - Dustin Hoffman (Tootsie) and Robert Redford (Sneakers) = All The President's Men (which my brother got right) 2) Helen Prejean and Randall M. Winston Jr. - Susan Sarandon (Dead Man Walking) and Barry Bostwick (Spin City) = The Rocky Horror Picture Show (another my brother got) 3) Madeleine Spencer and Jimmy Tudeski - Cybill Shepard (Psych) and Bruce Willis (The Whole Nine Yards) = Moonlighting (Not only did Joe get this, but so did yaffa) 4) Joe Dominguez and The Squirrel Master - Cheech Marin (Nash Bridges) and Tommy Chong (Half Baked) = Cheech and Chong (they were in a lot of things together, not that anyone identified them) 5) Nick Ryder and Nero Wolfe = Joe Penny (Riptide) and William Conrad (Nero Wolfe) = Jake and the Fatman (another that no one got) 6) Andy Hardy and Snake Plissken - Mickey Rooney (Andy Hardy) and Kurt Russell (Escape from L.A.) = The Fox and The Hound (Joe got this one too) 7) Everett McGill and Charlie Simms = George Clooney (O Brother, Where Art Thou?) and Chris O'Donnell (Scent Of A Woman) = Batman & Robin (although I don't remember ever seeing Clooney in that movie) 8) Chris Adams and Karen Holmes - Yul Brynner (The Magnificent Seven) and Deborah Kerr (From Here To Eternity) = The King And I (another one that stumped everyone) 9) Nick Martinelli and Stuntman Mike = Sylvester Stallone (Rhinestone) and Kurt Russell (Death Proof) = Tango and Cash (no one got this one either) 10) Tony Stark and Gigolo Joe - Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man) and Jude Law (A.I.) = Sherlock Holmes ( filkertom gets points for this) Today's question is about fictional addresses. Who live at the following addresses: 1) 76 Totters Lane 2) 890 Fifth Avenue, Manhattan, New York City 3) 4222 Clinton Way, Los Angeles, California 4) 740 Evergreen Terrace 5) 425 Grove Street, Apartment 20, New York 6) 730 Knapp Avenue, Milwaukee, Wisconsin 7) 4 Privet Drive, Little Whinging, Surrey 8) Apartment 5A, 129 West 81st Street, New Yor 9) 1630 Revello Drive 10) 1407 Graymalkin Lane |

Do people want to get together for a barbecue and games on Yom HaAtzma'ut? I had posted 10 song lyrics and had asked you to identify the song and the singer. Here are the answers: 1) I remember long ago when the sun was shining - redaxe knew that this is Genesis and Land of Confusion. 2) And if some suitor comes approaching, will you let him through your door - No one got this. Boston and St. John by Great Big Sea. 3) More than the rivers that run the land, we've got it all in our hands. - Another one no one got. This is Brian Adams, Sting and Rod Stewart with All for Love. 4) I'll hear you when you're calling, I'll catch you when you're falling - Yet another one that stumped everyone. This is Don't Cry sung by Asia. 5) So I read to myself a chance of a lifetime to see new horizons - joebrown42 knew that this is A-Ha, and Manhattan Skyline. 6) Here the ship sailed out into the blue and sunny morn, the sweetest sight ever seen - redaxe and Shany Topper both recognized Queen's 39. 7) He walks unhindered through the picket lines today, he doesn't think to wonder why - My brother got this one also. It's the Police and Syncronicity II 8) As every galaxy was formed in less time than it takes to sing this song. - Points go to filkertom for getting the theme song for Big Bang Theory which was sung by Barenaked Ladies. And before you go back to check up on this, this particular line is from the complete version of the song, not the shortened one used on the show. 9) If you should ever leave me, well, life would still go on, believe me - joebrown42 got this one as well. This is my favorite Beach Boys song - God Only Knows. 10) He stares across the water and sees right through the lock - Joe guessed correctly, and this is Madness with One Better Day. Which just leaves us with today's question, which is from the world of comics. I will name 10 comic book characters, either super heroes or villians. Let's see how many of them you can identify. 1) Alec Holland 2) Chuck Taine 3) Erik Josten 4) Steve Harmon 5) Percival Chang 6) Tom Mayflower 7) Sara Pezzini 8) Jim Hammond 9) Al Pratt 10)Logan Wayne |

| | Who Can It Be Now - Men At Work | ] | I have just been too tired to update this in a while. But I have been thinking about it, and working on a trivia question, so I may as well get that out of my system. But first, I owe you an answer. I had asked the common denominator between the Kronans, Alfred Stryker, the Mole Man, Turtle Man, the Fixer and Dr. Sivana. While my brother was close, misterseth got it right. They all were first enemies of different superheroes. The Kronans are the correct name for the Stone Men from Saturn that battled Thor in his first appearance, Alfred Stryker was a criminal in Gotham City that Batman took down, the Mole Man fought the Fantastic Four, Turtle Man tried to stop the Flash, the Fixer was behind the course of actions that lead Daredevil to fight crime and Dr. Sivana, of course, was the archenemy of the Big Red Cheese himself, Captain Marvel. Today's question is about pairs from movies. I will describe a pair of people and you will need to figure out who they are. For example, if I said Johnny Hooker and Ari Ben Canaan, you would be expected to know that Robert Redford had played Johnny Hooker in The Sting and that Paul Newman had played Ari Ben Canaan in Exodus, and that the other movie duo they had played (which wouldn't be The Sting since I had used it in the clue) was Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid. Let's see how many you can get without checking IMDB. 1) Michael Dorsey and Marty Bishop 2) Helen Prejean and Randall M. Winston Jr. 3) Madeleine Spencer and Jimmy Tudeski 4) Joe Dominguez and The Squirrel Master 5) Nick Ryder and Nero Wolfe 6) Andy Hardy and Snake Plissken 7) Everett McGill and Charlie Simms 8) Chris Adams and Karen Holmes 9) Nick Martinelli and Stuntman Mike 10) Tony Stark and Gigolo Joe |

| | Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds - The Beatles | ] | I just had to go to the Egged offices near Malcha. Egged is the bus company in Jerusalem. And to the best of my knowledge, Malcha is still in Jerusalem. But their phone number is an 03 number. For those of you who don't know the Israeli phone system, 02 is the area code for Jerusalem. 03 is the area code for the Tel Aviv area. Oh, and get this. No buses go there. What a pain in the tuchus. And to make matters worse, I just found out that the only people who can reactivate my phone (I had lost it on a bus, which is why I had to go to the bus company offices to pick it up, and in the meantime had shut off my line) only work from 8am to 7pm. So if you need to call me for the next 12 hours, please do so on my home phone. |

| | The Sun And The Rain - Madness | ] | Not very long ago, I posted about how I was starting a new job. Well, that job fell through within a few days. But all is not lost. I started a new job last week. I am going to be doing QA for FXCM. As of right now, I am training to do the job of the people I will be QAing. Next week, when they start going on the floor, I will be learning the QA side of things. What is a little scary is that as of right now, not only am I the only QA guy in Israel, but I am the only QA guy in the company. Should be interesting, no? Anyway, trivia. I had listen ten planets and asked you to identify who from that planet had visited Earth. Here are the answers: 1) Decapod 10 - Dr. John Zoidberg, who my brother correctly identified. 2) Melmac - Everyone who answered got this one, which is Alf, of course. 3) Langara - No one got this. Jonas Quinn came from here, and went on to join the team of Stargate SG1. 4) Antar - This is where they come from on the show Roswell. Another that no one got. 5) Zrfff - Both joebrown42 and redaxe knew this one. Mr Mxysptlk comes from here. 6) Chr'Yllalisa - I am not surprised no one got this one. In the Marvel Universe, the most famous Chr'Ylite is Sikorsky, medic to the Starjammers. 7) Alzarius - Points go to lovechilde and redaxe for knowing where Adric, Companion to both the Fourth and Fifth Doctors, came from. 8) Exor - This one I am also not surprised that no one got. The Wonder Twins, Zan and Jayna, hail from here. 9) Tryl'sart - No one knew this one either. This is where Hepzibah, also of the Starjammers, came from. 10) Raxacoricofallapatorius - Again, both lovechilde and redaxe got the Doctor Who reference. The Slytheen come from here. So today's question is once again music lyrics - I will quote ten songs, and you need to identify the singer/band and the song. Here goes: 1) I remember long ago when the sun was shining 2) And if some suitor comes approaching, will you let him through your door 3) More than the rivers that run the land, we've got it all in our hands. 4) I'll hear you when you're calling, I'll catch you when you're falling 5) So I read to myself a chance of a lifetime to see new horizons 6) Here the ship sailed out into the blue and sunny morn, the sweetest sight ever seen 7) He walks unhindered through the picket lines today, he doesn't think to wonder why 8) As every galaxy was formed in less time than it takes to sing this song. 9) If you should ever leave me, well, life would still go on, believe me 10) He stares across the water and sees right through the lock |

| | In My Life - The Beatles | ] | I just got back from lunch and an afternoon of games with aethereal_girl and dhole. First of all, I want to thank them again for hosting me. As usual, I enjoyed myself. We finished off the evening with a movie. Now, we have watched some bad movies in our time. Real stinkers. This one was one of the worst. The movie was Birdemic. The first half of the movie was about how a guy approaches a girl in a diner, acts really creepy, and then takes her on the most boring dates ever. Then they start getting attacked by the worst visual effect on the planet of stationary birds. So they drive around, occasionally stopping to fire their guns (no need to reload them, of course), picking up and losing various companions on the way, and making comments about how they are the last people around, completely ignoring the cars passing them on the highway and the people walking in the background. Then the "birds" flew off (i.e. the effect was moved over the ocean). No explanation given for why they attacked or why they stopped. Oh, and then was the piece in the middle where they met the long haired hippie who lives in the woods, trying to protect the "redwoods" (those weren't redwoods!) from the pollution and the big corporations, and then there was a forest fire. A truly horrific movie. And before I get to trivia, I also wanted to thank pantherwarrior and roseball for dinner last night. So. Trivia. I had asked for you to identify ten fictional divine beings. Here are the answers: 1) Pygar - the angel played by John Phillip Law in Barbarella. No one got it. 2) Clarence Odbody - redaxe and joebrown42 both knew that this is the angel who saves James Stewart's life in It's A Beautiful Life. 3) Bartleby - lovechilde, avgboojie and joebrown42 correctly guessed Ben Affleck's character from Dogma. 4) Leonardo Wyatt - No one got this either. This is Brian Krause's character from Charmed. 5) Travis Montgomery - Okay, this one I am not surprised that no one knew. I mean, how many of you watch All My Children? 6) Xaphania - Xaphania is the leader of the rebel angels allied with Lord Asriel in the war against The Authority. This is taken from the His Dark Materials trilogy by Philip Pullman. 7) Issek - Kudos to redaxe for knowing this. There are many gods named Issek mentioned in Fritz Lieber's books, but the main one (Issek of the Jug) was served by Fafhrd for a short time. 8) Cloister the Stupid - avgboojie, you should be ashamed of yourself!. As my brother knew, Cloister the Stupid was really Lister (of Red Dwarf). 9) Lord L'Zoril - I would have been surprised if joebrown42 hadn't gotten this one. This is the Martian name for Dream of the Endless. 10)Flatulus - Another that no one got. He is the Ephebian God of the Winds, from Terry Pratchett's Discworld series. Today's question is about common denominators. What is the common denominator of the Kronans, Alfred Stryker, the Mole Man, Turtle Man, the Fixer and Dr. Sivana? |

| | A Spaceman Came Traveling - Chris De Burgh | ] | I had asked people to identify the groups, based on the members. Here are the answers: 1) Lee, Sylvester, Pat, Greg, Justin, Oliver and Roy - The Seven Soldiers of Victory were Crimson Avenger (Lee Travis), Star-Spangled Kid (Sylvester Pemberton), Stripesy (Pat Dugan), Vigilante (Greg Sanders), Shining Knight (Sir Justin), Green Arrow (Oliver Queen) and Speedy (Roy Harper). Wing was the "unofficial eighth soldier". Itai was the only one who got it. 2) Roy, Clarence, Nils, Patti, Bruce, Garry, Steven and Max - joebrown42, redaxe, Itai and Thom Guthrie all knew that these are the members of the E Street band. For those of you who still don't know who that is, the Bruce in the group is Bruce Springsteen. 3) Gordie, Chris, Teddy and Vern - Joe and Itai got this one. These are the four kids in the Stephen King novella The Body, which was made into the movie Stand By Me. They were played by Wil Wheaton, River Phoenix, Corey Feldman and Jerry O'Connell. 4) Simon, Jane and Barney - Itai and redaxe both identified these as the Drew kids in Susan Cooper's The Dark Is Rising series of books. 5) Barry, Maureen, Christopher, Eve, Mike and Susan - Everyone got this one right. Barry Williams played Greg, Maureen McCormick played Marcia, Christopher Knight played Peter, Eve Plumb played Jan, Mike Lookinland played Bobby and Susan Olsen played Cindy. 6) Hank, Eric, Diana, Presto, Sheila, Bobby and Uni - Points go to Itai and my brother. These are the main characters in the Dungeons and Dragons cartoon. 7) Boris, Robert, David, Sara and Brian - The Knights of the Dinner Table. Joe googled it, Itai knew it. 8) Sammy, Joey, Frank, Dean and Peter - Everybody got the Rat Pack. 9) Chynna, Carnie and Wendy - Another one that everybody knew. Wilson Philips. 10)Timothy, Gabriel, Robert, Dino, Isadore, Jonathan, Percival and Eric - Itai got this one correct. They are the members of the Howling Commandos, who were led by Sgt. Nick Fury. I was very impressed that Itai got all ten, and in a very short period of time. Today's question is about visitors to Earth. I will name ten planets. You have to answer which denizen of that planet has visited Earth. 1) Decapod 10 2) Melmac 3) Langara 4) Antar 5) Zrfff 6) Chr'Yllalisa 7) Alzarius 8) Exor 9) Tryl'sart 10) Raxacoricofallapatorius |

| | School's Out - Alice Cooper | ] | Okay, enough people have asked me for details. So I guess I should let people know what I am about to start working in. It's a company that sets up online courses for people. Not a video classroom, but rather a web based course that you can study on your own. The problem is that the last one they developed took six months longer than it was supposed to. So their plan is to have me build the HTML and CSS code for the display, then send that to the developers, who will just have to hook the back end to my code. For now, from what I understand, I will be working out of this guy's apartment, which is in the building next to Shawn and Yaffa's (for those of you that know where they live). It starts off as a month's trial period, and will hopefully turn into a full time job, assuming they like my work. Oh, and I found the job by sending my CV in response to an ad on IsraEmploy. And I start tomorrow. And so to trivia. I had asked what the fourth longest running sci-fi series is, after Doctor Who, Smallville and Stargate SG1. The answer, which everyone (other than misterseth) knew, is The X-Files. Today's question is all about fictional divine beings. See how many of the following you can identify: 1) Pygar 2) Clarence Odbody 3) Bartleby 4) Leonardo Wyatt 5) Travis Montgomery 6) Xaphania 7) Issek 8) Cloister the Stupid 9) Lord L'Zoril 10)Flatulus |

| | The Living Years - Mike and The Mechanics | ] | I haven't posted a trivia question in a while, so I will do so now. I had asked for you to figure out who the actors were, based on a mashup of their roles. Here are the answers: 1) A brownie who collected Objects - No one got this. Kevin Pollak played Rool in Willow and Karl Kreutzfeld in The Lost Room. 2) An amorous Thermian tries to take over a girl band - Missi Pyle (Alexandra in Josie and the Pussycats and Laliari in Galaxy Quest). Points go to misterseth and to joebrown42. 3) A messy sportswriter coaches the world's worst little league team - Both filkertom and joebrown42 got this one. Walter Matthau portrayed Oscar Madison in The Odd Couple and Morris Buttermaker in The Bad News Bears. 4) An assassin robot hides on Earth while serving in the Metropolis SCU - Another one that no one got. Joanna Cassidy did the voice of Maggie Sawyer in Superman, and played Zhora in Blade Runner. 5) Moses' brother turns into a bug - Sorry, misterseth, but Alan Komet got it right. While Vincent Price was in The Ten Commandments, he played a character named Baka. Jeff Goldblum did the voice for Aaron in The Prince of Egypt, and was Seth Brundle in The Fly. 6) Ferris' older sister refuses to have more flair - Yes, zevabe, there was a Ferris Beuhler TV show, and Jennifer Aniston did play Jeannie in it. And of course, she was Joanna in Office Space. 7) One of the leaders of the pop art movement attempts to stop a girl from navigating through a maze - Both filkertom and misterseth knew that this is David Bowie. Both also knew that I was talking about Labyrinth, where he played Jareth the Goblin King. But only misterseth knew that he was also Andy Warhol in Basquiat. 8) Janet accidentally summons the Devil - Susan Sarandon was Janet in The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and was Jane Spoffard in The Witches of Eastwick. Points go to joebrown42 and filkertom for knowing this. 9) A French police officer is a fire chief who looks like a French soldier and poet - zevabe got this one as well. Steve Martin portrayed Inspector Clouseau in the remade versions of The Pink Panther (and as much as I like Steve Martin, he doesn't hold a candle to Peter Sellers) and portrayed C. D. Bales in Roxanne. 10)Superman's mom was his girlfriend as well - filkertom knew this one as well. Annette O'Toole played Martha Kent in Smallville and Lana Lang in Superman 3. Okay. So now here is today's question. I am going to list the names of the members of a group. You need to identify the group they are all in. 1) Lee, Sylvester, Pat, Greg, Justin, Oliver and Roy 2) Roy, Clarence, Nils, Patti, Bruce, Garry, Steven and Max 3) Gordie, Chris, Teddy and Vern 4) Simon, Jane and Barney 5) Barry, Maureen, Christopher, Eve, Mike and Susan 6) Hank, Eric, Diana, Presto, Sheila, Bobby and Uni 7) Boris, Robert, David, Sara and Brian 8) Sammy, Joey, Frank, Dean and Peter 9) Chynna, Carnie and Wendy 10)Timothy, Gabriel, Robert, Dino, Isadore, Jonathan, Percival and Eric |

| | The Big Bang Theory Theme Song - Bare Naked Ladies | ] | My sister in law is going in for a C section on Sunday. Her name is Keren Tamuz bat Ziva. Thanx in advance for any and all good thoughts, prayers, and wishes. I haven't posted a trivia question in a while. I had posted ten lines from songs in my collection. I asked you to identify the singer and song. Here they are: 1) Gronk gronk gronk gronk - joebrown42, if you want to argue whether or not "gronk" is a word, feel free to argue it with filkertom, as it's one of his songs. It's The Twelve Days of Star Wars. I didn't say that I was quoting WORDS from the song, but that I was quoting LYRICS. And lovechilde, that shows how long it's been since you were at a filksing. Shame on you. 2) I'm happy, hope you're happy too - As joebrown42 knew, as did my friend Yafit, this is David Bowie's Ashes to Ashes. 3) I found the simple life ain't so simple, when I jumped out on that road - redaxe got this one. Running With The Devil by Van Halen. 4)Though your hurt is gone, mine's hanging on inside - No one got this. Phil Collins, I Wish It Would Rain Down. 5) The people keep on grabbing, ain't wishing I was well - Another point for redaxe, who knew that this is Squeeze and Tempted. 6) I know it's late, I know you're weary - While I knew that it was originally Bob Seger's song (Thank you, filkertom for that!), I have the Kenny Rogers and Sheena Easton version of We've Got Tonight. Points to janetmiles who knew it also. 7) Raise the art to resistance, danger dare to be grand - Yes, Joe. This is by Rush. It's Anagram (For Mongo). 8) The five years we have had have been such good times, I still love you - Don't You Want Me by Human League. No one got this one. 9) Hauled in by the metro for killing time and pain with a singing brakeman screaming through your veins - I am not surprised that no one got this. Not many of my friends listen to Kinky Friedman. This song is Sold American. 10) And then the lightning flashed, and the thunder roared, and people calling out his name - Both redaxe and joebrown42 knew that this is Chris De Burgh's Don't Pay The Ferryman. So here is today's question, which comes to us from the world of television. The longest running science fiction show is obviously Doctor Who. Second place is currently held by Stargate SG1, but that will be changed at the end of the current season of Smallville. My question is, what show comes in next place after these three? |

| | Force Ten - Rush | ] | My next birthday is a bit of a big one. For those of you who don't know, I will be turning forty. Now I know that it is still six months from now, but I have already started thinking about it. And one of the things that I want to tell people about is what I want for my birthday. I have always been open with my books, lending them to people. This has led to me having had books disappear, and even having had to buy books with my name in them from second hand book stores. Here is a list of some of the books that I am currently missing from my library. If you happen to have them, I would be happy to get them back and remove them from this list. 1) Neverwhere, by Neil Gaiman 2) Essential X-Men, volume 2 3) V for Vendetta, by Alan Moore 4) The Dilbert Principle, by Scott Adams 5) Essential Uncanny X-Men, volume 1 6) A Case Of Lone Star, by Kinky Friedman 7) While The Cat's Away, by Kinky Friedman 8) Requiem for a Ruler of Worlds, by Brian Daley 9) Jinx on a Terran Inheritance, by Brian Daley 10)Fall of the White Ship Avatar, by Brian Daley 11)Shadow Moon, by Chris Claremont and George Lucas As for trivia, I owe you an apology. I accidentally posted the answer to one of my questions twice, and skipped giving the answer to one of them. So here are two answers. First of all, I had asked where the Giant Purple Snorklewacker lives. Both filkertom and siliconshaman knew that it lives in Michael Binkley's Closet of Anxieties. This is from the comic strip Bloom County, which I am a big fan of. The other question I had asked was which TV duo was played by William Anderson and Bert Gervis Jr. No one answered. Well, what if I added that William Anderson changed his name to Adam West and Bert Gervais Jr. changed his to Bert Ward? Ring any bells now? And for those of you who are still scratching their heads, they were Batman and Robin from the classic campy TV show from the 60s. Which means I need to post a trivia question. Well, today's question is about movies. I will do something I did a while back and had a lot of fun putting together. I am going to describe a mash-up of different actors' roles, and you have to figure out who the actor is. Here is the list: 1) A brownie who collected Objects 2) An amorous Thermian tries to take over a girl band 3) A messy sportswriter coaches the world's worst little league team 4) An assassin robot hides on Earth while serving in the Metropolis SCU 5) Moses' brother turns into a bug 6) Ferris' older sister refuses to have more flair 7) One of the leaders of the pop art movement attempts to stop a girl from navigating through a maze 8) Janet accidentally summons the Devil 9) A French police officer is a fire chief who looks like a French soldier and poet 10)Superman's mom was his girlfriend as well And I know that some of these are kind of hard. But let's see what you can figure out. |

And it's getting me down. So I will turn to trivia, in the hope that it will get me going again. That and the BMN tomorrow night. Anyone else coming to that, btw? (And for those of you who don't know, BMN = Bad Movie Night) I had asked who the arch-enemies of Fawkes, Venom, Bruiser, Kwan and Valkyrie are. Those are the names of the members of the Axis of Anarchy, who are the arch-enemies of The Knights of Good. What was that? You are asking who those are? What? Are you telling me that you don't watch The Guild? Let just tell you that it stars Felicia Day and Wil Wheaton plays Fawkes (as my brother knew). So here is today's question. I will quote lyrics from ten songs from my library. Please identify the song and the singer/band. Oh, and I warn you that these lyrics are not necessarily the first line in the song. 1) Gronk gronk gronk gronk 2) I'm happy, hope you're happy too 3) I found the simple life ain't so simple, when I jumped out on that road 4) Though your hurt is gone, mine's hanging on inside 5) The people keep on grabbing, ain't wishing I was well 6) I know it's late, I know you're weary 7) Raise the art to resistance, danger dare to be grand 8) The five years we have had have been such good times, I still love you 9) Hauled in by the metro for killing time and pain with a singing brakeman screaming through your veins 10) And then the lightning flashed, and the thunder roared, and people calling out his name

| | The Never Ending Story Lyrics - Limahl | ] |
I want to start something that I was involved with in the past. It was a group of round robin stories. For those of you who don't know what that means, the idea is that I write a page of text of a story and send it to person A. Person A adds a page of text to my story and sends it to person B, who adds a page and sends it on, until it eventually gets back to me. I then add another page to what everyone has written, and the cycle starts anew. There would be some kind of time limit to make sure that the stories don't get bogged down. So I am looking for people who would like to write these kinds of stories with me. I have a couple of ideas for stories, and am open to additional ideas, if anyone would like to suggest them. Please let me know if you would like to join any of the stories. We would need at least three people on a story to make it work. Here are the ideas I have so far: 1) Superheroes 2) Post apocalyptic - There was a nuclear war 300 years ago, and a group of people survived the war by living in a giant underground city. Now they have decided to send a group to the surface to see whether it is safe to leave the city. 3) Post apocalyptic - There was a world war of some kind, and the protagonists of the story are survivors. Something along the lines of Gamma World, if that means anything to anyone other than me. 4) Swords and sorcery 5) Science fiction - A spaceship exploring the great unknown. I don't want this to be a parody of Star Trek, but it's along similar lines. If people want, it could be set in the Star Trek universe, just not be the crew of the Enterprise. This isn't a place to write fanfic. 6) Science fiction - Something set on a space station like Babylon Five (again, not to be fanfic) where different alien races come into contact. |

And we believe that on the New Year, we are judged by G-d as to what kind of year the upcoming year will be, based on our actions over the past year. Because of this, it is customary to ask forgiveness from all of your friends and family for any and all actions, whether they were done on purpose or by accident, that the other person may have take offense at. These actions may not have been done intentionally to hurt the other person as well. Therefore, I am asking all of you to please forgive me for anything I might have done. I would also like to say that I forgive you for anything you might have done. I hope that all of you are inscribed in the Book of Life for a good and sweet year, and that you have nothing but good things, good news and good times with good friends. And as the prayer says, let the past year and it's bad things end, and let the new year and it's blessings commence. תכלה שנה וקללותיה, תחל שנה וברכותיה |

All those who shows up help decide. Oh, and another question that I get asked, yes, it is perfectly all right for you to bring people with you. I had quoted ten songs from my collections and asked you to identify the song and the performer. And the envelope, please: 1) Ten more minutes till he gets there, the crossword's nearly done. - Cardiac Arrest, by Madness. Correctly identified by my brother. 2) Watch the sparrow falling, gives new meaning to it all - Pull Me Under, by Dream Theater. lovechilde got this one. 3) He watched his son hang candy canes all made with red dye number three - The Christians and The Pagans, by Dar Williams. Points go to redaxe and lovechilde. 4) There's a pulse in the new-born sun, a beat in the heat of noon - The Majesty Of Rock, by Spın̈al Tap. Joe got the name wrong, but I will give him credit anyway. 5) A hypodermic needle, some kid chewed up by a shark, it's amazing the things you can find in an Oceanside park. - I thank filkertom for not giving away his own song, Walking Along The Beach. I am going to assume it was his intention, and not that he suffers from Frank Hayes Disease. Those who did correctly know it were redaxe, antongarou and lovechilde. 6) Ain't no doubt about it we were doubly blessed, 'cause we were barely seventeen and we were barely dressed - redaxe got Meat Loaf's Paradise By The Dashboard Light. And I agree with him that it is kind of inappropriate for a wedding. For those of you who don't know, the song is basically about a teenage couple about to have sex in their car. 7) He may conceal a king in his hand while the memory of it fades - Both lovechilde and harpoholic correctly identified Sting's Shape Of My Heart. 8) Natus est de virgine sine viri semine qui mundat a crimine - I am not surprised that no one got this. I mean, it's in Latin after all. For those of you who want to know, it is Mediæval Bæbes, and the song is Ecce Mundi Gaudium. 9) And I burned down the malt shop where we used to go just because it reminds me of you - The one song filkertom did get was this, One More Minute, by Weird Al Yankovic. 10) But there are no more humans, finally robotic beings rule the world - No one got this one either. It's Flight Of The Conchords, and the song is either called Robots or Humans Are Dead. Tonight's question is from comics. What color was the original Batmobile? |

| | The Highwayman - Loreena McKennitt | ] | So Movie Night went well. I had Yehuda and Anna King over, and we watched the first part of The Lost Room, which was a three part miniseries done by the Sci-Fi Channel (back when they could spell their name correctly). After I posted a request for books to be returned to me, I have received almost all the books that I have lent out. Now there are books that I know I will never get back, but there are still two of them that I really would like to find out who has them. I am referring to Marvel Essential Uncanny Xmen and V for Vendetta. If you do have my copies of either of these books, please return them to me, and I promise not to mangle you too much. Thank you in advance. Which leads us to trivia. I had asked how many humans finally made it to Earth at the end of the 2004 remake of Battlestar Galactica. I got no answers at all to the question. The answer is 49579, according to the opening credits. Tonight's question is about movies. In which movie would you find Rawhide, Reno, New Jersey, Pinky and Perfect Tommy? |

| | דון קורלאונה - אלי בר יהלום | ] | It's been a while. I know, I know. But I have been busy with stuff. What stuff, I hear you ask? Well, other than work, I was in Hillel's production of Beauty and the Beast. I got involved about 3 weeks before we went on, and as a result, was in the chorus. I had no lines of my own. But that was okay. I still enjoyed doing it. And if you really want, you can watch the opening scene here. I appear a couple of times at the far right of the stage. And since I haven't done it in a while, I will ask a trivia question. I had asked what the common denominator between Baseball Hall of Famer Reggie Jackson and the Israeli commando Yoni Netanyahu is. And as trempnvt knew, they were classmates at Cheltenham High School in Wyncote, Pennsylvania. Today's question is from the world of music. I will quote a line from ten different songs in my library. Please identify the singer/band and the song. 1) Ten more minutes till he gets there, the crossword's nearly done. 2) Watch the sparrow falling, gives new meaning to it all 3) He watched his son hang candy canes all made with red dye number three 4) There's a pulse in the new-born sun, a beat in the heat of noon 5) A hypodermic needle, some kid chewed up by a shark, it's amazing the things you can find in an Oceanside park. 6) Ain't no doubt about it we were doubly blessed, 'cause we were barely seventeen and we were barely dressed 7) He may conceal a king in his hand while the memory of it fades 8) Natus est de virgine sine viri semine qui mundat a crimine 9) And I burned down the malt shop where we used to go just because it reminds me of you 10) But there are no more humans, finally robotic beings rule the world Yes, some of them are easier than others. | | ימים לבנים - גידי גוב | ] | So here's what's been going on: ( Cut because this turned out to be a lot longer than I thought it would be. ) And that is where I am now and where I have been. I also want to wish Mazal Tov to avgboojie on the birth of her son. His hair isn't purple ... yet, but I am assuming that it is just a matter of time. And that only leaves me to ask a trivia question. I had asked who was the first Aluf in the Israel army. My brother got it correct, and zevabe claims that he would have guessed it as well. It was David "Mickey" Marcus, sadly shot by a sentry when he stepped out of his tent, wrapped in a sheet, in order to pee in a field and he didn't understand enough Hebrew to understand the sentry's challenge. Today's question is from the world of television. According to the credits of the remake of Battlestar Galactica, how many humans made it to Earth? |

On a complete side note, I still think it is hilarious that the sign in front of where we had been stationed in Tze'ilim said "אני מילואיניק גאה". Yes, the army put up a misspelled sign. And to trivia. I had asked what the first TV advertisement in the US was for. Anna King, my brother and Anonymous all knew that it was for Bulova watches. Today's trivia question is a common denominator question. What is the common denominator between Baseball Hall of Famer Reggie Jackson and the Israeli commando Yoni Netanyahu? |

| | צליל מכוון - צליל מכוון | ] | Army reserve duty. That kind of sums up my week. I went in Monday morning, and spent the day helping process the rest of my unit in. Tuesday, we went to the range so I could prove to the army once again that I am a terrible shot. Wednesday, my major went off to the base where we will actually be serving to check things out, so I had to sit around all day doing nothing, waiting to process any guys who showed up. Thursday, we went to the base we will be serving at. The conditions are kind of lousy - field toilets and showers, but at least the office I will be sitting in is nice, and we have decent toilets in there. I wasn't there for dinner last night, so I don't know what the dining room/kitchen conditions are like, and they still hadn't posted our guard duty schedule, so I don't know how they screwed us with that either. I just hope that they remember that I am the only of the clerks there - the other two guys got out as one of them, his wife had a daughter two weeks ago, and the other one's wife is on bed rest due to the fact that she is about to give birth. So, for the weekend, my major is manning the office. But even when there are two of us there (and there are two other officers who also man the office with me), I am still the only one who is required to do guard duty. The other two officers who are with us are the company's rabbi (who happens to be a really nice guy) and a female officer. Surprisingly, we have four women in our reserve unit. Only three have actually been called up. One is the officer who will work with us. One is a mechanic (!) and the third, who is also an officer, I haven't met and am not sure what she will be doing. From what I understand, she is only supposed to be there next weekend, and I will be off again for that. And now I am at my parents for the weekend, and have to go back on Sunday. And I owe you all an apology. It has really been much too long since I posted a trivia question. I had asked for the common denominator between Aladdin, Black Air, Shade and Eagle. The correct answer, which my brother knew, is that they are all governmental agencies that have appeared in comics. Aladdin is from Malibu Comics' Ultraverse imprint. Black Air is an Intelligence department founded and operating primarily within the United Kingdom in the Marvel Universe, initially as an adjunct to the Ministry of Defence. Shade (or rather, S.H.A.D.E) is the Super Human Advanced Defense Executive, which is a United States military organization that investigates, assesses, and contains paranormal and superhuman activity from D.C. comics. E.A.G.L.E. is the Extranormal Activities Garrison for Law Enforcement, a government agency within the Astro City universe. Today's question is (surprise, surprise) about the Israeli Army. Who was the first person to be given the rank of Aluf (Major General)? |

| | And You and I - Yes | ] | So, on my way out the door this morning to go sign in at the unemployment agency, I checked the mail and found a letter from the army waiting for me. I was pleasantly surprised to find that I have been promoted. I am no longer a staff sergeant, and am now a first sergeant. And do you know what that means? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. But the fact that they bothered to actually print out a letter and pay the postage to send it to me perked me up. It reminds me of one of my favorite Beetle Bailey strips. The jeep goes down the hill with the caption "Sarge wants me to pick up some beer." The jeep then comes up the hill with the caption "I wonder if Sarge wanted chips with that." The jeep then goes down the hill, and the caption reads "Sarge did want chips." The last box simply said "America's tax dollars at work". I forgot to post about the last BMN, which was just attended by Nomi, Alter, Uriel and myself. First we watched the next segment of the Batman serial we are going through. This episode was called "Robin Rescues Batman!". The rescue was a rather spectacular one - it involved Robin running into the room Batman was in, helping him to his feet and asking him if he was all right. It is rescues like these that remind me of how much help Robin really is to the Caped Crusader. And what do you think of those funky horns on Batman's head? After that, we watched Evil Brain from Outer Space. This is a Japanese movie about how Starman fights evil ninjas and some kind of creature (we are still not sure what that thing was meant to be) by them dancing past each other. Oh, and if the little girls' skirts were any shorter, the movie would be kiddie porn. Then we watched Creature from the Haunted Sea. The best part of this movie (and the only part that really made sense) turned out to be the animation during the opening credits. I am still not sure why they decided to called it a haunted sea. And the creature was a diver is a really phony looking suit. And the only haunting part of the movie was how characters kept appearing from nowhere and without any kind of introduction. And then we watched another part of the Batman serial. At that point, our brains couldn't handle any more, so we called it a night. And it's about time that I posted a trivia question. I had asked how many suicides there are in Shakespeare's plays. zevabe could think of three. joebrown42 said there were 10. Well, I have found a problem in giving a straight answer. One source says there are 13 (Romeo, Juliet, Cassius, Brutus, Portia, Othello, Ophelia, Lady Macbeth, Mark Antony, Cleopatra, Charmian, Iras and Eros). Another source has 12 (Goneril, Juliet, Lady Macbeth, Cleopatra, Brutus, Mark Antony, Cassius, Ophelia, Othello, Portia, Romeo and Timon). There are 10 names that appear on both lists. And some other web site I found says there are 8 more possibles in addition to the 13 in the first list (but doesn't list names). So there are anywhere between 10 and 21 suicides. And since I don't have time to quickly read through the entire works of Shakespeare, I am going to leave the question as is. Today's question is from the world of entertainment, I guess. My question is what was the first TV advertisement in the US for? |

| | The Ying Tong Song - The Goons | ] | I know that most of the people who read this are religious Jews, but not everyone is (and many are not even Jewish), and since I respect your opinions (no matter how silly they are), I would like to know what you feel about the following story. In the Israeli army, it is forbidden to cook on the Sabbath. This is the law regardless of whether you do not believe in Judaism, due to belonging to another religion or due to your not believing in anything. A group of soldiers entered the kitchen one Sabbath to find that a cat had somehow gotten at the pot of food that was sitting on a hot plate (the food in this pot had been fully cooked prior to the Sabbath, and was sitting on this hot plate since then, this not being considered a form of cooking. For those of you who are Jewish, we are talking about a pot of cholent). Since they felt that they couldn't eat out of this pot, one of them decided to cook something else. He was put on court martial, and was sentenced to 21 days in military prison. Now, the severity of the punishment might seem a little strong, I will agree. However, the officer who sentenced him did say that this soldier had caused problems in the past. Without any more details, it is difficult to know why such a strong sentence was handed down. I just want to hear what you think about this, and about the whole situation. And stop whining that I haven't posted a trivia question in a while. I will do one tomorrow. |

Let me know which night you want to come. As for trivia, I had asked you to identify actors based on two of their roles. An evil Kylothian monster is a lawyer in Boston - joebrown42 googled the answer. Laura Flynn Boyle played the Kylothian monster Serleena in MiB2, and portrayed Helen Gamble for 6 years on the show The Practice. The antichrist got chased by a dinosaur - filkertom and silvia_tamburu both knew that Sam Neill played Damien in Omen III and Dr. Alan Grant in Jurassic Park. Don Quixote fought with Arabs against the Turks - filkertom correctly identified Peter O'Toole as having portrayed Don Quixiote (Man of La Mancha) and Lawrence of Arabia. Al Capone will risk getting arrested to fix your air conditioner - joebrown42 and Ilan got this. Robert De Niro played Al Capone in The Untouchables and Archibald 'Harry' Tuttle in Brazil. A teapot turns out to really be a Chinese spy - Points go to filkertom for identifying Angela Lansbury. She did the voice of Mrs. Potts in Disney's Beauty and the Beast, and was Mrs. Iselin in the original version of The Manchurian Candidate. Lassie reports on magical events in Chinatown - themoniker was the only one to get this. Kim Cattrall was Lassie in the movie Porky's and was Gracie Law in Big Trouble in Little China. The mayor of New York knocked on the door of a very strange house after his car got a flat tire - filkertom, janetmiles, zevabe and joebrown42 all knew that Barry Bostwick was Mayor Randall M. Winston Jr. on the show Spin City, and was Brad in Rocky Horror. A homicidal barber got killed by Freddie Kruger - Both harpoholic and silvia_tamburu knew that Johnny Depp was both Sweeney Todd and Glen Lantz (in the very first Nightmare on Elm Street movie). The tomboy of the four daughters turns out to be an android when faced with the Queen - joebrown42 and silvia_tamburu got this one. Winona Ryder was in Little Women (as Jo March) and in Alien: Resurrection (as Annalee Call). The watcher served as a doctor in the Korean War - zevabe correctly identified Donald Sutherland as Merrick, who was the watcher in the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie, and was Hawkeye Pierce in M*A*S*H. Tonight's question is related to the Bard. How many suicides are there in Shakespeare's plays? |

I will give the points to silvia_tamburu, because she guessed what I thought was the correct answer (prostitute). However, upon rechecking my facts, I find that Janet Gaynor was awarded the Oscar for her part in three different movies (Street Angel, Sunrise and 7th Heaven) and she was only a streetwalker in one of those. I will let you figure out for yourselves which one it was. Today's question is from History. Which was the first country to recognize the US? |

| | The Old Dope Peddler - Tom Lehrer | ] | I had asked what is the common denominator between the French city of Nouvion and millionaire Kyle Richmond. As joebrown42 knew, Kyle Richmond is the Marvel superhero known as Nighthawk, and Rene Artois, who runs a cafe in Nouvion, was code named Nighthawk (in the TV show 'Allo 'Allo). Today's trivia question is all about movies. I am going to combine two roles that an actor/actress has portrayed, and you have to identify them. So, for example, is I were to say that he is a rebellious convict in an asylum who finally goes crazy writing a novel in a hotel off-season, I would be referring to Randle McMurphy (One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest) and Jack Torrance (The Shining), both parts portrayed by Jack Nicholson. I tried not to make things too obscure. Here goes: An evil Kylothian monster is a lawyer in Boston The antichrist got chased by a dinosaur Don Quixote fought with Arabs against the Turks Al Capone will risk getting arrested to fix your air conditioner A teapot turns out to really be a Chinese spy Lassie reports on magical events in Chinatown The mayor of New York knocked on the door of a very strange house after his car got a flat tire A homicidal barber got killed by Freddie Kruger The tomboy of the four daughters turns out to be an android when faced with the Queen The watcher served as a doctor in the Korean War |

| | Take The Money And Run - Steve Miller Band | ] | And there is nothing I can do about it. Okay, I started a new job. That is good news. Very good news. But it means that I will have to work next week. Which raises two issues. 1) I will miss ICon. 2) I don't have a Succah to eat in. I live on the top floor of my building, there is no access to the roof, and there is nowhere in the apartment to build a Succah. When at work, there will be Succot nearby that I can use (either at the Malcha mall or they think there will be one at the Open University campus on the other side of the Technological Park). But at home, I won't have one. Which means that I will be avoiding bread and pretty much all starches for a week. Which is going to be a pain. But I will manage. And I will miss ICon. I look forward to it - not that I usually go to more than one or two of the screenings or lectures, but it's seeing people that I only get to see a couple of times a year and hanging out with friends. But work comes first, and I don't have a choice. On a brighter not, I have trivia for you. I had listed 10 places where visitors have come to visit the Earth, and asked you to identify the visitors. Here are the answers: 1) B3K - No one got this, which disappointed me a little. Am I the only one who remembers that Xev Bellringer, crew member of the Lexx, is from B3K? 2) Cybertron - Both antongarou and cogitationitis knew that the Transformers come from Cybertron. 3) Dimension X - The answer i was expecting was the one that tremir gave, which is Krang (of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fame) is from. But joebrown42 did inform me correctly that Slapstick's powers and many of his original foes did come Dimension X as well. 4) Antar - trempnvt knew that Antar is the source planet for the aliens on the TV show Roswell. 5) Remulak - doccross and janetmiles knew that despite insisting they were from France, the Coneheads on SNL really came from Remulak. 6) Bolovax Vik - joebrown42 insisted that there was a Green Lantern reference in the list. Well, poozer, Bolovax Vik is Kilowog's home planet. 7) Alzarius - No one got this one either. Alzarius is where Adric, companion to both the Fourth and Fifth Doctors Who, is from. 8) Takis - As doccross knew, Takis is where Dr. Tachyon is from, and where he developed Xenovirus Takis-A, also known as the Wild Card virus. 9) Hala - cogitationitis and joebrown42 knew that Hala is the home planet for the Kree, of which Captain Marvel (from Marvel Comics, not the Fawcett/DC character) is a member. And I have no idea what Joe was talking about when he mentioned the four horsemen of the X-Men. The Four Horsemen that Apocalypse used were all mutants from Earth. 10) P3X-888 - Only cogitationitis knew that this is the planet that the Goa'uld originated from, on the show Stargate. Tonight's question is from movies. What was the profession of the character portrayed by the first woman to be given an Academy Award? |
